A motorcycle (also called a motorbike, bike, or cycle) is a two- or three-wheeled motor vehicle. Motorcycle design varies greatly to suit a range of different purposes: long distance travel, commuting, cruising, sport including racing, off-road driving, and even freestyle. Motorcycling is riding a motorcycle and associated subculture. The term motorcycling includes the associated subcultures. Motorcycling can be a hobby, sport, or even a way of life for those that enjoy it. Motorcycling enthusiasts are sometimes known as motorcyclists, riders, bikers, or wheels.
Motorcycles usually have two wheels, and nearly all have an engine. They are distinguished from cars by having no body or chassis, and from bicycles and scooters by having a motor. They are also not classified as carts or horse-drawn vehicles. Some motorcycles resemble cars and bicycles in various ways, such as having three wheels (trikes) and having enclosed bodies (cruisers, tourers, and scooters), but such resemblance is superficial. Like cars, motorcycles may have passenger seats. Unlike cars, motorcycles almost never have doors, and the driver and passenger sit directly on the seats rather than in a compartment.
Motorcycles range in power from very small, low-powered, and cheap, to very powerful and expensive. The size and power of a motorcycle depends on the intended market. For example, a commuter may prefer a smaller, less powerful, motorcycle that is cheaper to buy and run, while a racer will require a larger, more powerful, motorcycle to achieve higher speeds. Touring motorcycles often have much larger fuel tanks than other types of motorcycles to accommodate long trips. Most have a top speed of 80 to 120 mph (130 to 190 km/h), but some are capable of over 180 mph (290 km/h). The fastest road-legal, production motorcycle is the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which is capable of over 260 mph (420 km/h). Custom motorcycles, such as the 1967 Chisum Chopper, which currently holds the land speed record for a production motorcycle, are capable of over 300 mph (480 km/h).
